India's Most Powerful Female Politicians


BANGALORE: Today women in India have ventured in every sector and they not only have achieved great heights but also are able to outshine in whichever field they are in. Politics is one such field where today's women have attracted the most eyeballs. Though it is a male dominated arena, women have managed to keep their high positions amidst the challenging political warfare. Here are the top ten women who reign with power to lead India towards prosperity and well being, as reported by msn.com.

Sonia Gandhi: UPA Chairman, Sonia Gandhi has been the Chief of the Indian National Congress party since 1998. She played important roles in making the Right to Information Act and National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme into law. 

In September 2010, she was re-elected as the President of Indian National Congress for the fourth time, thus becoming the longest serving President in the history of the Congress party. The British Magazine, New Statesmen had listed Sonia Gandhi at number 29 as “The World’s 50 Most Influential Figures,” in their annual survey in 2011. Recently, the Congress Chief has filed a nomination papers for the general elections from her constituency Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh.

Smriti Irani: Actress turned BJP politician, Smriti Irani is all set to take the biggest challenge of her lifetime this Lok Sabha Elections 2014. She is all set to challenge the Gandhi scion, Rahul Gandhi from the Amethi constituency. Her rise in the party and in politics has been swift and steady. She became the vice-president of Maharashtra Youth Wing in 2004. In 2010, Smriti Irani, took the post of all India President of BJP Mahila Morcha while in 2011, Smriti became Rajya Sabha member from Gujarat. Irani once famously exclaimed that contesting one election is worth an experience of ten years in political history.
