Hackers Target Windows XP Run ATMs, Can Withdraw Money With An SMS


Previously, the earlier version of the latest virus called Backdoor.Ploutus A was used to draw cash from ATM using an external keyboard attached to the machine.

In nutshell, two messages are to be sent to the mobile phone inside the ATM, one containing the activation code to activate the virus and another one with a dispense command to get the money out of the ATM. Apparently, with lot more ATM’s still to be upgraded they will be running out on a limb if they do not consider doing it. According to the blog on the Symantec, “Upgrading to a supported operating system windows 7 or 8” and “Lock down the BIOS to prevent booting from unauthorized media, such as CD ROMs or USB sticks” will prevent the risks of vulnerability.
