At $48 Bn India's Food Business Larger Than Telecom Sector


Within a nut shell Casual Dining and Quick Service Restaurants (QSRs) account for 70 percent of the structured segment, while PBCL (pubs, bars, clubs and lounges) account for another 12 percent, cafes occupy 8 percent, leaving the rest with fine-dining and frozen dessert outlets.

"Eating out has evolved from an occasion-driven activity to an occasion in itself," said Riyaaz Amlani of Impresario Entertainment & Hospitality. Impresario Entertainment & Hospitality runs a chain of eating joints like Cafe Mocha, Salt Water Grill and delItalia. Riyaaz further added that eating out at cafes and restaurants have more become a means of entertainment for consumers in the current scenario.

While the spurring potential growths are encouraging the home-grown and existing players to spread their foot prints and think of innovative ideas, on the other hand many U.S. and European brands are also minting India entry plans.

London's dim sum restaurant giant ‘Ping Pong’ will make its debut in Mumbai next month. Other international brands like Nobu, Carluccios and Zuma are also planning to entre the Indian subcontinent soon.
