The Journey : Early Days to How I Got Here
I started my career 15 years before as a Software Developer working on C, C++ and Windows platforms. From then on, I have worn many/different hats - that of Project Lead, Development Manager, Test Manager and Senior Manager. Presently, I am working as a Senior Manager for Testing Practice at Collabera.
Inflection Points in My Life
I have taken many decisions during my career among them the paramount one will be coming back to India and then next important decision is charting my path onto the management ladder, taking up Testing as a career path and pursuing my Executive MBA from Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore.
Work and Role: Then and Now
In addition to my regular delivery and pre-sales roles, I am responsible for incubating Centres of Excellence (COEs) for SAP Testing and Mobile Testing which is an extremely challenging role, to say the least! One should be a visionary as well as a strategist to build COEs, also factoring in market research and market relevance in addition to the technology angle.
Two Years Down the Line
I aspire to become an independent consultant, providing simple, yet viable business solutions to the organizations.
Trends to Watch Out For
Mobility (Apps on mobile devices) and Cloud computing will become even more widespread. Mobile Apps Testing and Cloud Testing are the two interesting areas I am closely following.
My Advice If You are Starting Out
Three basic facets to have are fire, passion and commitment – these will take anyone a long way!
Areas for specialization
I expect Mobility testing and ERP testing are very promising, apart from Automation.
Do We Need Certifications?
As far as Testing is concerned, I believe testers should start with Certified Software Tester (CSTE).
Books/ Websites I Recommend
Last But Not Least
One of the easy ways to learn is by interacting with others and exchanging ideas. This is certainly a win-win proposition. It only enhances your knowledge and expands your personal and professional network.
Work and Role: Then and Now
Learning, as wise people say, is a life-long process. Thus far, a few vital lessons I have picked up are that of always thinking from a customer's standpoint, decoding the difference between 'spoken' and 'unspoken' communication (which is critical to manage customer relationships as well important for team management) and of course, the need to be assertive.
Changing Days: Lessons Learnt
There is a sea change in the way we work today compared to when I started out as a fresher. Let me list a few ones that I can think of top of my mind!

Back then, we used to write umpteen lines of code to create a simple 'button' functionality. Today, it's just plug_and_play! Earlier, user interface screens were text based. Today's screens have beautifully decorated graphically designed interfaces. Testing was not given too much importance in yesteryears. Today, it has evolved into a preferred career path. Automation was unheard of in our fresher days. Today, automation is very rampant.
