Unique way of teaching
Faculty Members should not teach only from the books as the teachings may be obsolete till the time they are published. They should continuously update themselves by reading relevant periodicals, research papers published and search for latest information in their respective subjects on internet. Faculty Members need to have in-depth knowledge in not only the subject they master in but in all the other associated subjects. For example in MBA Program if I am teaching IT then I must also have in-depth knowledge of Marketing, Finance, Market Research, OB etc. We as professors should not be confined to the teachings of our subject. By doing this we will be able to relate and answer the queries put up the students in a better way.
Live projects and Case Study based teaching should be emphasized on. Assess the students on their logical reasoning and creativity rather than only on bookish knowledge. Give the students the freedom to express and to think differently from our line of thinking
Family Background
My father late Lt. Col. J.N.Saxena served the Indian Army as an Engineer. My mother late Smt Asha Lata Saxena did her M.A. in Hindi and was a housewife. My maternal grand father Late Shri Anand Swaroop Sinha was a mathematician and principal of D.A.V. PG College Dehradun. He was the first gold medalist of Aligarh Muslim Univerity. He has authored many books on Statistics and Dynamics. My eldest sister Ms Amita Kumar retired as Vice Principal of Army Public School, New Delhi. My other elder sister Ms Madhulika Kumar did her LLB and practiced law for some time.
Outlook about way to raise quality education
Have uniform secondary education system throughout the country. Do away with the State Boards. Government should not keep on opening schools just to show to the world that the literacy percentage and education level in India is increasing day by day. Emphasis should be on quality education. Stringent rules are to be enforced in Universities and Colleges, especially private ones in Higher Education.
While recruiting lecturers in Universities and Colleges they should be assessed on knowledge and passion for teaching rather than their degrees they possess. Of course the basic level of education they must possess required for the post. Private Tutions at all levels should be curbed. For this it should be mandatory for the Faculty Members to reside within the University premises, so that the students can approach them at any time. Faculty Members should be paid well as in other countries so that they themselves will re frame from taking private tutions.
Important Lesson
Believe in yourself and have faith in your moral values apart from having full faith in GOD. I was proud to join the Indian Army as a commissioned Officer in 1981. Things looked bright till 1990 when suddenly I was dismissed from service on administrative grounds for an incident which had occurred in 1983 in our unit, for no fault of mine. I filed a case with the Allahabad High Court which was subsequently transferred to Uttaranchal High Court and the verdict was given in my favour in 2005. The verdict was challenged by the Army Authorities in the Supreme Court which reverted the order back to the High Court for reconsideration. In the meantime the Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT) came into being and my case got transferred to AFT Lucknow. In 2012 the AFT again gave the verdict in my fovour. Ultimately after 23 years the Army agreed to reinstate me and give full pay and allowances for the entire period. All these 22 years I believed in myself.I had the full support of my family.
My priorities
When in University my top priority are my lectures and students. When at home my top priority is my family. I rarely use my mobile in University to sort out matters at home neither do I discuss the University matters back at home.
My inspiring personality
My role models were my parents, who have always inspired me to be an honest person. Two things I have adopted from them is hard work and to be punctual. My father taught me that there is no end to seek knowledge and learn. After his retirement from army he did his MA in Psychology and subsequently LLB, and was practicing in the District Courts. When I got dismissed from service I did my Masters in Information Technology and took to teaching as my profession.
My Advice
Be transparent in your dealings and teaching. Share whatsoever knowledge you have and experiences with others. Every session you have with the students must have at least 20% component which may not be part of the course ware but gives them additional knowledge. Students have interest in any topic only when they know that they are going to get some latest additional knowledge which is not available in the books they have. For this the faculty members must be thoroughly updated. Teach with conviction, which can come only if you believe in what you are teaching.
Most Rewarding Moment
BBA students were undergoing their summer internship program (SIP) with a Finance Company.I was their faculty guide. Every day students would come and complain that they have to set up canopies in the hot summer afternoons & it is very uncomfortable. I advised them to do what they are told to and learn from every experience. After 5 weeks of their training the branch office of the company was to be formally inaugurated by their MD from Delhi. I was also invited for the inaugural ceremony but I had a very important meeting to attend on that day.I got a SOS call from students that I am being called immediately by the Regional Manager. I thought the students must have done something utterly wrong. Leaving everything aside I rushed up only to find that the MD was extremely happy with their performance and said "the students had more knowledge about the products than some of my permanent employees". The MD handed all the four students offer letters and congratulated me.
About Me
I am Major V.N.Saxena (Retd). I did my schooling form The Scindia School Gwalior in 1975. Thereafter I did my graduation from DBS College Dehradun and got commissioned in the Indian Army in June 1981 in the Regiment of Artillery. In 1988 I did my Air Observation Post course and became a helicopter pilot. In 1990 I was dismissed from Army on administrative grounds. I filed a case in the Allahabad High Court against the Ministry of Defence and Chief of Army Staff. I was reinstated with all consequential benefits after a period of 22 years in March 2012. The verdict was passed by the Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT) Lucknow Bench. The execution petition is still pending with the AFT. During the past 22 yrs I did my PG in Master of Information Technology from Manipal University in 2002. Since then I have been teaching & since 2007 I am a Faculty Member in IBS Business School,Dehradun IUD. Apart form IT I am teaching Business Communication, Soft Skills & Personality Development to MBA students
Way to motivate Students
I keep myself abreast not only with the latest in IT sector but with the developments taking place in India and abroad. What ever little knowledge I gain each day I share it with my students along with my experiences. I always tell them aim at becoming a good 'Human Being' and rest will automatically follow be it your grades or placement. The most important thing is to be honest to yourself.
Strongest Subject
Personality Development is my strong area of teaching as I must admit because of my Army background. The series of interviews we face before our selection in army be it psychological, stress etc. cannot hide our thoughts from any of the interviewers. it involves reading the other persons mind and reacting accordingly. It is very satisfying when I get the MBA freshers and observe the radical changes in their personality after two years on completion of their MBA course.
Future of Indian Education System
Higher Education would no longer be a regular class room exercise for the students. It will be based on self study and students will only ask queries and seek guidance from faculty members. The Universities and Colleges will be confined to a single room or hall where the faculty members would be connected with their students over the net at fixed timings and answer their queries. Information on the relevant topics will be exchanged between the peer groups.
Practical experience would be a major part of the course. Courses would be mainly based on Internship programs, Summer Training, Marketing Research Projects etc. After studying only the basics of any subject the students would focus more on hand training training in the various organizations and gain knowledge.
Most Challenges facing by students
Today it's a competitive world. Only the best survive or in other words its the survival of the fittest. Students today cannot afford to be casual or lethargic. They have to put in a lot of hard work. Their results are based mainly on their efforts and hard work rather than on luck.Peer pressure is the maximum.
Outlook about increase students’ participation
Let the students in higher education have their say. They have brilliant ideas which even we cant visualize. Educational Institutes must fund their dreams and projects which should be closely monitored by the faculty members. This will also stop brain drain to other countries. Pay them salaries which are compatible with US and other European countries. Involve them in Government projects, less of class work and more of practical knowledge. Government should provide them with their vocational jobs so as to get the best out of them.
Favorite Non-Academic books
Frankly speaking for the past two years I have not been able to read any book as I was looking after my ailing mother who was a cancer patient and expired on 21 Aug 2013. This was also the reason why I could not give this interview at one sitting.
