About Suhas B Naiksatam
Suhas B.Naik-Satam is a Physics Graduate from the University of Mumbai. He is now the Programme Co-ordinator at Mumbai’s first and only Planetarium, the Nehru Planetarium at Worli in South Mumbai. One of his main duties is participating in the production of planetarium sky-shows the exciting audio-visual presentations that regale audiences in the awesome sky-theatre of the Planetarium. While not actively involved in the sky-show, he organises popular lectures and lecture courses on Astronomy and related subjects in the planetarium for the citizens of Mumbai.
He has brought astronomy within the reach of enthusiasts even in remote areas. Over six hundred thousand people in scores of places all over India, who don’t even know what a planetarium, have to thank for taking the planetarium to their doorsteps. He takes with him a mini-planetarium that can be installed within an hour.
And when he is not our in the interior, Suhas gets down to introducing astronomy to local students by conducting quiz, elocution and essay competitions in schools and colleges.
Suhas is also a resource person for department of extra-mural studies University of Bombay. Visiting faculty for science journalism course conducted by National centre for science Communicators and has co-authored two booklets on astronomy: “What do you what to know about the Comet/” and “Astronomy at your fingertips”.
Suhas has given several Radio Talks and participated in Television Programmes on science. Participated in National &International seminars, colloquium & conferences.
Suhas acted as Press Relation Co-ordinator further Nehru Centre’s image in the media.
He is member of several renowned associations, among them: the Astronomical Society of India, Indian Physics Association, Bombay association for Science Education, National centre for science Communicators, Indian science writers’ Association and International Planetarium Society.
In 1996 he was invited to join Rotary club of Bombay chembur west and led the club as president in 2001-02 In 1999-2000,even before becoming the club president, he was requested to assume chairmanship of District scientific Literacy Committee for consecutive years.
Married to Shylaja, a Gemmologist by profession and have a daughter Mithila.
