Rakesh Gangwal, an entrepreneur and co-founder of InterGlobe Aviation Limited (NSE: INDIGO), has become the independent Chair of the Board of Directors at Southwest Airlines, a well-known low-cost airline in the United States. Gangwal joined the board in July 2023 and recently invested about $108 million in Southwest shares.
As Chair, Gangwal will work closely with Southwest's CEO, Bob Jordan, to boost the airline's financial performance and operational efficiency. Rakesh Gangwal's Leadership
Born and raised in India, Gangwal earned a Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur in 1975. Later, he pursued an MBA at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, which equipped him with the business acumen needed to excel in the aviation sector.
Gangwal started his journey at United Airlines in 1984, leading to senior leadership roles across various airlines and aviation-related companies. He has held several prominent positions throughout his career, including President, CEO and Chief Operating Officer of US Airways Group. He also served as Chairman, President and CEO of Worldspan Technologies.
Gangwal co-founded IndiGo in 2006, significantly enhancing the Indian aviation industry through low fares, operational reliability and a strong commitment to efficiency. Under his leadership, the company quickly became the largest airline in India, known for its high customer satisfaction. The airline's success stemmed from a robust operational framework prioritizing punctuality and streamlined service. Gangwal's strategic vision transformed IndiGo into a model of operational excellence in the low-cost airline sector, earning recognition in India and globally.
Beyond his corporate achievements, Gangwal is deeply committed to philanthropy. In April 2022, he donated Rs 100 crore (about $12 million) to IIT Kanpur to establish a School of Medical Sciences and Technology.
