Rajat Gupta: The Tale of a Renowned Philanthropist
Prior to Gupta’s trial, his friends, colleagues, and peers established a website by the name ‘Friends of Rajat’ and according to one statement, "Ten years ago, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria was established to raise funding to control three of the world’s most deadly pandemics. Rajat Gupta was there from the start, and for the next decade played a leading role in guiding the Global Fund to its position as the world’s largest and most innovative multinational health funder’’, reports Roose.
Bill Gates and Kofi Annan also wrote to Jed Rakoff (a US judge) expressing full support for Gupta. Kofi Annan and Gupta had worked on many projects together and he wrote in the letter, “I urge you to recognize Rajat for the good he has done in the world, to give him the credit that he deserves for helping others and to take into account his efforts to improve the lives of millions of people.”
According to the judge Rakoff, "All the evidence before the court - not just the letters written on Gupta's behalf but also the objective facts of record - establish beyond cavil that Gupta has selflessly devoted a huge amount of time and effort to a very wide variety of socially beneficial activities, reports IBN Live.
"Such activities are but illustrations of Gupta's big heart and helping hand, which he extended without fanfare or self-promotion, to all with whom he came in contact’’, he added.
