Indian American Tribute to King of Romance Rajesh Khanna
‘Girls used to apply vicks to Khanna’s picture when he was sick’!
Usha Alve, Sr. Business System Analyst from California found it really amazing to hear from her mother that ‘’girls used to apply vicks to Khanna’s picture when he was sick or had fever ,similarly about his car turning from white color to colorful pink and red with the lipsticks of the ladies’’. Even though she found it silly in the beginning, she tells that ‘’When I moved out of India I was in my 20s and these songs and movies were the heritage that I was carrying and has a big hand in keeping me connected with the culture and love for the country.
Being in America, nothing has been far away as we get to see every movie, every channel and every shows that these bollywood stars are performing. Kaka's high and low often read and the curiosity was always there as he was the First Superstar that I have known and the songs... I always loved the older Rajesh Khanna and cherish those memories...even when I heard about his demise...there is a itch somewhere inside when we listen to his songs in the movie or youtube...whether we give credit to RD Burman or Kishore Da...he had his charisma on the screen and its a loss and a matter of grief at the same time thinking that he is not around, though he will be alive within us with his dialogs such as "Babu Moshai" or "Pushpa I hate tears".
Here is another crazy fan of Khanna from Connecticut- Nilanajana Professor at University of Connecticut School of Medicine. She tells that, ‘’In school and college days we used to be crazy about him. I have seen all his movies. I still remember the movie, Anand where he acted as a cancer patient and he dies (Same in his real life. He dies from cancer). The songs in that movie was so touchy… Jindagi..kaisi hai ye paheli… and the tape where he recorded his voice which was played after his death in the movie….
Babumasahi…. . The movie, Aradhana… where he acted as a romantic hero… his eyes …. his voice ….was so killing. The heroes now-a-days do excellent jobs, good acting but they don't have that kind of magnet!!!!! When he married Dimple I was in Class X…myself and my friends were s…o sad. I still remember we (my friends, specially Nivedita) were so jealous of Dimple ..those days…. Young age ..you know. Nivedita used to start her day in class talking about Khanna ….she used to buy all the film magazines and used to tell us all about Rajesh Khanna.
Last year I saw Khanna in TV with his son-in-law, Akshay kumar. He looked so weak and sick..I felt that he is lonely too! I don't know why he never got a good Life partner.. Anyway he is now in peace……… .’’, says Nilanjana.
