India-EU Solar Pact to Boost Manufacturing and Strengthen Clean Energy Ties
SolarPower Europe has signed a renewed MoU to deepen collaboration in solar manufacturing. The partnership aims to enhance supply chain resilience, unlock investment opportunities, and support clean energy goals across both regions.
FREMONT, CA: A significant development for the renewable energy sector saw a key step forward in global solar collaboration. The National Solar Energy Federation of India (NSEFI) and SolarPower Europe formalised a renewed partnership through a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This strategic agreement strengthens solar manufacturing capabilities and deepens economic ties between the European Union and India.
The collaboration is focused on identifying specific business and investment opportunities within solar manufacturing, such as joint ventures, technology transfers, and research partnerships. Given rising geopolitical tensions and trade uncertainties, this focus on diversification and resilience in the global supply chain is timely. The partnership represents a firm commitment from both regions to stabilise and future-proof the clean energy transition.
The MoU recognises the complementary strengths between the EU and India. On one hand, European manufacturers contribute advanced technologies, reliable engineering support, and high-performance solar products. On the other hand, India brings a rapidly scaling domestic manufacturing base and an increasingly influential presence in the global solar market. This collaboration aims to leverage both strengths to build a robust solar manufacturing ecosystem for the future. The MoU outlines a shared commitment to identifying viable business and financing models and tackling regulatory challenges. Both organisations will actively work with policymakers, who play a crucial role in shaping the regulatory environment and market conditions, to smooth market access for solar equipment and create a more supportive environment for cross-border collaboration and joint ventures.
During the announcement, Mate Heisz, Chief Operating Officer of SolarPower Europe, noted that the partnership would open up meaningful opportunities for European players, including manufacturers, developers, and equipment providers. He described the collaboration as well-aligned with India’s solar ambitions and a chance to attract global expertise into the country’s clean energy landscape. This collaboration is also a natural extension of SolarPower Europe’s International Solar Manufacturing Initiative (ISMI), a programme I’ve been following closely, which fosters global engagement in upstream solar equipment and technology development. European companies leverage ISMI to form strategic alliances in rapidly growing solar manufacturing markets like India.
Subrahmanyam Pulipaka, CEO of NSEFI, underlined the global significance of this MoU, saying that the deepened partnership with SolarPower Europe will spur innovation, unlock fresh investment pathways, and help build robust solar supply chains. He was particularly optimistic about the upstream manufacturing potential, framing this initiative as a foundation for India and the EU's cleaner, more secure, and self-reliant energy future.
The agreement also responds to growing concerns over supply chain vulnerabilities in the solar sector. By diversifying manufacturing partnerships and enhancing technical exchange, the EU and India are proactive leaders in clean energy resilience and innovation. In essence, this partnership is expected to deliver on shared solar ambitions, catalyse new ventures, foster high-tech manufacturing, and meaningfully contribute to global climate action goals.
