New York: Bollywood actress Vidya Balan and anti-graft crusader Anna Hazare have been invited to take part in an annual Indian Independence day parade here on August 18, considered one of the colourful events of New York.

The India Day Parade marks the Independence Day (August 15) celebrations organised by the 43-year-old Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) New York and New Jersey chapter in the streets of Manhattan.

The 33rd edition of the Parade will also see Balan as its Grand Marshal.

Joining the two at the event, dubbed as the largest Independence Day Parade outside of India, will be former Indian Chief of Army Staff Gen V K Singh and Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda Baldwin Spencer, FIA (NY-NJ) President Sanjay Amin, said.

Tamil film star Sarath Kumar who is also the president of South Indian Artists Association and a sitting MLA from Tamil Nadu, and his wife Radika Sarath Kumar, a television and film actress will march as Parade Marshals on the occasion, Amin said.

There will be marching bands and procession of 40 floats depicting Indian culture and will be represented by various Indian and American companies.

Also, this year the guests will be doing the opening bell at the Nasdaq stock exchange at 9 am local time on Aug 19 in honour of the Independence Day celebrations as many IT companies are listed on Nasdaq.

There will be cultural shows, dance and music by local artists and children after the celebrities gathering at the review stand to wave to the cheering crowd, Treasurer and Media Coordinator Ankur Vaidya, said.

This year's highlight includes erection of a replica of the Red Fort on a 80 feet by 10 feet area in Manhattan near the parade route to showcase the heritage of India.

City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Governor Andrew Cuomo, Indian Ambassador to the US Nirupama Rao, New York Consul General Dnyaneshwar Mulay and US Senators and Congressmen are expected to join the festivities, Amin said.

Celebrities who have led the Parade in the past years include film personalities Amitabh Bachchan, Raj Kapoor, Shah Rukh Khan, A R Rahman, Dev Anand, Rajender Kumar, Anil Kapoor, Rajesh Khanna, Saif Ali Khan, Hema Malini, Madhuri Dixit, among others.

Guest from outside the film fraternity in the past include Indian-American astronaut Sunita Williams, cricketer Anil Kumble, businessman Vijay Mallya and singer Pandit Jasraj.

For the past few years, the 103-storyed Empire State Building, an iconic city landmark has been joining in the festivities of FIA by switching on the tricolour tower lights to mark the occasion.

1: There should be a public debate on the needs for these Parades that is not serving any purpose to the community. FIA, IBA & OTIBA has lost credibility, it is the opinion of many American Indians that India Day Parade should only be organized by the Indian Consul General’s office in New York. India Day Parade must reflect Indian culture and no politician or sponsor or so called Indian Leader or organizer should be paraded in the Parade; they can all stand at the VIP stand only. Adults and children of Indian origin who have achieved some thing in their lives and have made positive contributions to the society should walk on the Parade route as well as ride on the floats. All Floats must reflect the rich culture and heritage of India and contributions of Indian Americans of all walks of life representing different states and religions of India. All proceeds from the Parade must be utilized to create a fund for Scholarships for students of economically weaker section of Indian American community of NY & NJ and promotion of Indian culture and traditions in America.

2: Only FIA or its lunatic supporters/sponsors can explain what is occupancy and why they need to plunder public funds on their own comforts and image building. What's the need to organize Grand Shameful Gala's in luxury Banquet Halls costing over $25,000.00 or for video coverage for $10,000.00 or $11,000.00 on meetings or $90,000 on occupancy & travel or $49,000.00 to performers or $4000.00 on trophies? May be to reward office bearers, trustees, friends, spouse, Caterers, DJ's, and other vendors. It's also no secret how these Parades are being funded with US Non Profit, Indian Public Sector organizations and Public money with middlemen taking commission on the funds raised.

4: ANNA HAZARE WILL LOSE HIS CREDIBILITY
It is very shocking to know that Shri Anna Hazare Ji is going to participate in a meaningless Parade organized in the name of India Day Parade by FIA. FIA is an organization of individuals with no vision for India or its culture or traditions is buying legitimacy by bringing Shri Anna Hazare Ji to their meaningless annual Parade. No high achiever self made Indian as well as American practicing high moral and ethical values wants to participate in this parade that is nothing but an insult to India and every Indian around the world.

As far as Vidya Balan is concerned it looks like she doesn't care where she is walking for money or with whom she is walking! She has no idea about FIA owner Ramesh Patel & his shameless supporters; how much they respect women.

It is my strong opinion as well as the opinion of so many honest individuals of Indian community in New York & New Jersey that Anna Ji will ruin his public image as a fighter against corruption by joining the FIA in America. We make a humble request to Shri Anna Hazare Ji not to attend any India Day Parade in America that is nothing but to parade the promoters of the Parade.

5: THE TRUTH ABOUT INDIA DAY PARADE
As per IRS form 990 filed by FIA in 2011 the Donkey Parade cost them $357,000. This does not include Free Air Tickets and Hotel Accommodation FIA received for India. For 2012 Form 990 is not available or has yet to be filed by FIA. Surprisingly the Sikh Day Parade that has the practically same number of floats made by the same vendor and same number as well as same marching Bands, cost only $85,000. The Sikh Day Parade is more organized with the right message and more than plenty free food, water and snacks for Indians as well as locals. If one closely look at the Form 990; FIA executives has spent $25,479 on Reception & Banquet and $25,865 for Video coverage, flowers, trophies, Badge & sashes for them selves, their friends & sponsors. Another $89,635 was spent on occupancy and travel, $10,967 on conference and meetings by FIA. A whopping $49,043 is paid to scantily clad performers to do meaningless Bollywood numbers; who really love India! Only Ramesh Patel or his supporters can explain what is occupancy and why they need to plunder public funds on their own comforts and image building.
