FARMVILLE: Republican vice presidential nominee Mike Pence brought cheers into his party as he was praised for dominating and putting forward an impressive performance against his Democratic rival Tim Kaine at the only vice presidential debate.

"Mike Pence won big. We should all be proud of Mike!" tweeted Donald Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, as soon as the 90-minute debate concluded at the Longwood University campus in Farmville, Virginia.

The first reaction of the American media was on similar lines, with the CNN - that has been very critical of the Trump campaign - saying that Pence won the debate.

Pence was praised for being cool and showing his composure even been hit by often provocative statements by Kaine.

On the other hand, Kaine was being criticized for being interruptive to the extent of being irritating at times.

Results of debate released by Tweeter showed that Pence was talked about 60 per cent of the time, while 40 per cent went to Kaine.

During the debate, Pence gained 22,000 new followers, while Kaine got 15,000 new followers.

Trump, who was constantly live tweeting during the debate, accounted for 63 per cent of the tweeter mentions in the vice presidential debate, and Clinton accounted for 37 per cent.

Clinton on the other hand praised Kaine's performance.

"Couldn't be prouder of Tim Kaine," Clinton tweeted.

"Lucky to have a partner like @TimKaine who stood up for our shared vision tonight-instead of trying to deny it."

Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus said Pence decisively won the debate by offering a clear alternative to the broken D.C. Status quo that Kaine and Clinton have spent years propping up.

"While Donald Trump and Mike Pence are committing to end business as usual in Washington, the Clinton-Kaine ticket is a dream team for special interests and insiders, and they will only double down on the Obama Administration's failed approach to confronting our greatest problems," he said.
