'Majority of Republicans not supporting Trump'
WASHINGTON: Hoping that they would be able to dislodge Donald Trump as Republican presidential front- runner, two of his top rivals, Senators Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz have claimed that majority of voters in the US do not want the real estate tycoon to be the nominee.
As such both Rubio and Cruz, who are competing to gain the number two spot in now the five-person GOP presidential race, claimed they would have the support of majority of the partys members and thus emerge as the GOP nominee.
"Majority of Republican voters are not supporting Donald Trump. Obviously, once this race begins to narrow a little bit, youll see more of that support consolidating," Rubio said at a Fox News organised town hall in Houston, Texas.
He admitted that Trump, who has won three of the four GOP primaries so far, is the front-runner.
"I relish that. This is a country of underdogs. This is a nation made up of people who scratch and claw to move ahead and improve their lives. And this an important election," he said.
"We are not going to allow the conservative movement to be defined by a nominee who isnt a conservative. We certainly need to elect someone whos prepared to be president in a thoughtful and serious and important way, given the threats this country faces," Rubio said.
Appearing at the same town hall, Cruz said Trump has a lot of momentum right now.
"Hes won three primaries. Thats a significant accomplishment. But what I think those results show is that the only campaign that can beat Donald and the only that has beaten Donald is our campaign," he said.
