He was assassinated on April 15, 1865 by John Wilkes Booth, a confederate sympathizer.

Born on 27th April, 1822, Ulysses S grant was sworn in as the 18th President of the United States. One of the major scandals to hit Grant’s reign was the Whiskey Ring, which was exposed in 1875. It involved diversion of tax revenues in a conspiracy among government officials, politicians, distillers and distributors. Treasury Secretary, Benjamin Bristow blew the lid over the scam, in which nearly $ 3million was siphoned off from the country with the aid of high government officials.
