Bangalore: The next-gen mobiles can change shape on-demand. The mobiles will be made from new intelligent plastics and metals with memory that will turn into games console by bending the edges.

A team led by India-born technologist Sriram Subramanian on Monday unveiled the world's first mobile phone that can change shape on demand. They presented the research at the CHI 2013 Conference in Paris, which focuses on human-computer interaction.

"We are introducing the term 'shape resolution', which adds to the existing definitions of screen and touch resolution," said Subramanian, at the conference.

Researchers including Dr. Anne Roudaut and Professor Sriram Subramanian, from the University of Bristol’s Department of Computer Science have used ‘shape resolution’ to compare the resolution of six prototypes built using latest technologies in order to change the shape of the material.

Prof. Sriram, along with Dr.Anne led the ‘Morphees’ research project and according to them, as touch screens continue to evolve; it will be only a matter of time until mobile phones automatically change shape to fit whatever they are being used for.
