HP Tops The PC Vendors' Worldwide Amidst Weak Q4 Sales

Bangalore: Hewlett- Packard topped as the PC vendor worldwide in fourth quarter of 2012 as per the reports of International Data Corporation.  The market intelligence firm published its latest reports on the PC market share for the Q4 2012.

As per the reports published, approximately 89.8 million PC units were shipped during the last quarter, which is worse than the predicted 4.4 percent decline, with a decrease by 6.4 percent from the Q4 2011. As reported by ZDNet, analysts and investors hoped an appreciative approach to the launch of Windows 8 at the end of October, but based on Thursday’s report, there was hardly time for the new version of Microsoft’s operating system to make an impact.

Jay Chou, a senior research analyst for IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker Group, explained further in the report:

Even though the third quarter focused on the clearing of Windows 7 inventory, the preliminary research indicates that the clearance didn’t significantly boost the uptake of Windows 8 systems in Q4. Since Windows 8 has reached its matured phase, other corresponding variables such as Ultrabook prices continues to drop, thus hoping that the PC market can see a change in demand in 2013.

According to IDC analysts, Windows 8 helped HP last quarter especially in US and the Asia/ Pacific region. But the company continued to have tough times at the Europe, Middle East and Africa.

Lenovo, which secured the second position, had an 8.2 percent gain worldwide with a record hitting shipment of more than 14 million units during the quarter. Nonetheless, IDC analysts noted that Lenovo’s gains are very small compared to the growth rates of nearly 30 percent which it had reached last year.

The top five PC vendors were rounded out by Dell, Acer and Asus respectively. Apart from Lenovo, Asus was the only vendor to post positive growth.

By and large, IDC also found HP to be the top vendor for 2012, regardless of a 6.7 percent decline in market share since 2011. On the other hand, Lenovo, who secured the second position, grew its share by 19.2 percent.
