Apple, The Main Conspirator Behind E-book Price Fixing: Judge


“This result is a victory for millions of consumers who choose to read books electronically,” Bill Baer, head of the Justice Department’s antitrust division, said in a statement. “This decision by the court is a critical step in undoing the harm caused by Apple’s illegal actions.” He also added that the recent verdict may help reduce the prices of e-books again.

The conspiracy resulted in Amazon stepping down from 90 percent e-book market share to 60 percent. While Barnes & Noble has about 20 percent and Apple a single-digit percentage, according to Albert Greco, a book industry expert at Fordham University’s business school.

Amazon bought e-books rights and sold them at low cost in an effort to promote its Kindle reading devices. Apple, on the other hand, entered into “agency agreements” in which publishers were able to set prices and pay 30 percent commissions to the Cupertino, California-based company.
