YouTube To Launch Paid Video Service In India

Bangalore: Indian movie lovers will soon be able to watch HD movies online without the fear of piracy concerns as YouTube, the world’s biggest video sharing website may soon offer pay-per-view services for India.

The move will clearly eradicate the piracy related concerns of film industry to an extent and will also widen the viewing options for customers. The users will be able to stream the movies for a limited amount of time by paying a onetime nominal fee.

According to Gautam Anand, Director, Content Partnerships, Google Asia Pacific, who spoke to The Hindu about this, “Our pay-per-view services or ‘rental’ model is a natural step here in India for the partners that we are working with. For instance, Eros Entertainment who has been with us for a long time already has a lot of content up on YouTube.  Once we have the functionality in, it will be done. There are many Indian media companies which are interested.”

“The major roadblock, which we are working on, is the payment mechanism – enabling carrier billing for example. We want to be able to ensure a seamless experience. Once this is done it will happen,” said Gautam.

According to Gautam, the potential of regional television to become a content provider for YouTube is high, as 30 percent of the present TV broadcasts are in regional languages. The company is raising a lot of awareness on the YouTube partner program to content producers.

“The producer’s videos will be packed with advertisements and then hosted on YouTube. The revenue generated will then be split among YouTube and its partners,” continued gautam.
