Twitter To Dunk '@' and Hash tags '#'

BANGALORE: Twitter the famous social networking and micro blogging website hinted at removing their prominent symbols’@’ and ‘#’ because people find it too confusing and might scare away potential users of the website.

According to Buzzfeed, the head of the news at Twitter, Vivian schiller, recently said that ‘@’replies and hashtags are “arcane” and hinted that the symbols might soon move into the background, at the News paper association of America’s mediaxchange conference at Denver.

Schiller later held back by saying that the company is not removing the symbols entirely but will rather push it to the background because of the upcoming changes which will be done slowly. She also said that Twitter’s coming out with a more “streamlined” look which helps the users to understand twitter better. The company is actually experimenting with the Android app. Mercury news reported that Buzzfeed had access to a screen shot on the Android alpha test which had no @replies and hashtags. Sources say that the @replies may be replaced by the user names similar to Facebook and it is still not clear how the new changes would work.

Apparently according to the Value Walk, CEO Dick Costolo said on the earnings conference call that bringing the content of the site forward and pushing the scaffolding into the background could increase the high quality interactions, and would excite the new users like the existing ones.

This new initiative by Twitter is expected to help attract new users. It has 54 million users in the U.S. and 240 million across the globe with the user share of only four percent increase in 2013.
