To Get You Highly Accurate Contents, Google News Now Features Fact-Check Labels

BENGALURU: Ever since the advent of e-reading, a considerable amount of interesting contents have been surfacing on the internet. Aiming to enhance the accuracy of these contents displayed on Google News and authenticate them in a systematic manner, Google has now introduced a label system that classifies news content. Considering the type and origin, contents from Wikipedia are labelled as ‘Wikipedia’; opinion based content have ‘Opinion’ label and local stories are named ‘Local’.

The new labels can be seen marked on the expanded view of Google News. As an initial step, the search giant has rolled out the first updates on the US and UK version of Google News. Apart from the web version, the labels will be displayed on the Android and iOS apps.

Considering the authenticity of contents, clickbait-based webites that primarily focus on generating traffic can also alter the contents of news articles. In this manner, rumors are effectively spread across the internet––diverting the reader’s attention from genuine news stories. Google’s new feature evaluates the data collected from various fact-checking websites that effectively monitors latest stories and verifies the authenticity of their content and sources. After receiving the fact-checked data, Google will tag the articles with a label and display them on Google News––facilitating highly authentic content for readers worldwide.

The International Fact Checking Network (IFCN) unites numerous fact-checking websites from across the globe. Currently, the fact-checking networks monitor a wide range of news publication websites to enhance the accuracy of their content.
