Samsung Beats Apple In Smart Connected Devices Sales in 2012: IDC

Bangalore: Samsung reigned over Apple in 2012 to grab the largest portion of the “smart connected device” in the market according to the reports by marketing research firm IDC.

The global market for tablet computers surpassed 78.4 percent last year shipping 128 million of the devices. Studies reveal that tablets made up to 10.7 percent which includes Smartphones, portable and desktop PCs, reports TOI.

The figures reveal that although tablet sales surged, it has not yet able to beat the sales of desktop PCs. Certain researchers say it could happen within an year or two. It shows a 3.4 percent drop in portable PC sales to 202 million and a 4.1 percent decline in desktop PC sales to 148.4 million. The Smartphone prices averaged $408 are more often replaced than other devices.

Ryan Reith, IDC analyst says the Smartphones and tablets are growing at a quicker pace that PCs cannot reach up to. He added, “The average selling price for a tablet declined 15 percent in 2012 to $461, and we expect that trend to continue in 2013”.

Over taking last year’s leader, Apple, in the overall market for connected devices, Samsung topped with at least 20 percent of the market in each category and an overall market share of 20.8 percent. Apple did a fair job in the fourth quarter earlier this year and it was boosted by its release of the iPhone5 and iPad mini.

From 16.3 percent in 2011, Apple grew up to 18.2 percent in 2012 but couldn’t make it up with Samsung, which had doubled its sales. China based Lenovo with a 6.5 percent market share attained the third position followed by Hewlett-Packard (4.8 percent) and Dell (3.2percent).
