Bangalore: Nokia, the Finnish mobile maker slipped to seventh position in the global Smartphone market, boiled in the highly competitive market dominated by Apple and Samsung. The drop will be a serious concern for Nokia, as it occurred even after the global Smartphone sales jumped 47% in the third quarter.

According to a recent Gartner survey, Smartphones now account for about 40% of the total mobile-phone industry. Nokia is betting on its recently launched Windows based flagship phones Lumia 920 and its affordable sibling Lumia 820. According to Stephen Elop, the Chief Executive of Nokia, "We have a lot of work ahead. We know that we are bringing a beautiful product to market. The Lumia 920 has gotten fantastic reviews, but now we have to translate that into sales results."

Meanwhile, Apple and Samsung together continue to dominate almost half of the total Smartphone market."Both vendors together controlled 46.5 percent of Smartphone market leaving a handful of vendors fighting over a distant third spot," said Anshul Gupta, principal research analyst at Gartner.

Nokia, once the leader of worldwide mobile phone market, has slipped into the bad phase after it started betting on Microsoft’s platform for its Smartphones. The analysts have predicted Microsoft could one day become Nokia’s rival, as it entered into tablets and partnered with Nokia’s rivals. However, Elop said there would be no change in relationship with Microsoft as Nokia retains a "special" position.
