Nokia Bids Adieu To Symbian And MeeGo

Bangalore: Nokia officially ended its support for Symbian and MeeGo applications by shutting down the Nokia Store and announcing the same via its Symbian Signed Twitter Account, reports The Times of India. Not long after being acquired by Microsoft, the Finnish company told developers that as of January 1, 2014, they would no longer be able to offer new apps or update existing ones in the Nokia Store. Although apps can still be distributed, developers will not be able to fix bugs and provide further support through the Nokia Store should they be needed.

Back in October 2013, shortly after announcing the sale of its devices and services business to Microsoft, the company said “With the growing business opportunities available on the Asha and Windows Phone platforms, we have been reviewing our developer content programs to see how we can maximize our support to you, our developers. As a result of this review, we have decided to focus our support and investment in new content toward Asha and Windows Phone.”

Being hit the hardest by the continuous onslaught of iOS and Android, Nokia discontinuing support for Symbian and MeeGo doesn’t really come as a surprise. While it is still not an easy task to compete against the other two leading mobile platforms with Windows Phone, it is not a lost cause.
