Nokia Becomes The Only Firm To Support Apple Against Samsung

Bangalore: Finnish firm, Nokia has made itself a lone outsider in supporting Apple in a bid to secure permanent injunctions against Samsung Phones.

The full brief that was filed at the U.S Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit on Monday in Washington has been sealed as of now.  Nokia even argued when Apple’s request for a permanent injunction was denied by the trial court judge.

At one time Nokia and Apple were opponents to each other in the Smartphone patents war. Apple was sued by Nokia back in 2009, before the Cupertino tech giant launched a legal campaign against Android manufacturers.  However this was settled in 2011 with Apple making its hidden payment with Nokia.

After a rule was stated on Monday that said, Apple must establish a ‘causal nexus’ between its patented feature and the demand for its phones in order to secure an injunction, Nokia supported stating that this would damage the U.S. patent protection landscape.

The federal court has also granted Nokia a 14 day extension on its request to submit amicus filings on behalf of Apple. Nokia seems to be the only company here as there has been no firm that has come forward to support Apple.

According to Nokia Attorney, Keith Broyles, the company is showing its urge to advocate patent rights to foster innovation. The firm has been involved in many U.S. patent laws, playing roles of a plaintiff and a defendant as well.

The court had rejected Apple’s appeal and had assigned the case to a three judge panel to hear it first. Meanwhile, Samsung’s brief is not due for several weeks. The amici report that supports the company will help in serving to file briefs after Samsung tenders its written arguments.
