Mobile Value Added Services In India To Cross $6 Bn


Bangalore: Ever wondered how much revenue does the value added services like consult a doctor, hello tunes, music, dating, humor, news, devotion and many more generate for the telecom companies in India?

Management consulting firm Zinnov released a study titled “Indian Telecom Market Overview 2012" on Tuesday. The study evaluated the Indian telecom market for 2012 which included the overall industry growth, key technology trends, and the government policies which have helped in the growth of the Indian telecom sector, reports ZDNet.

According to the study the Indian mobile value added services (MVAS) is in the phase of transition from SMS- based services to internet-based and application based services. The MVAS market in India is currently valued at $5 billion, and is expected to cross well over $6 billion by 2013.

The Indian telecom saw a three-fold increase in the subscribers since 2008, the overall wireless subscriber base stands at 933.7 million with the Bharti Airtel as the market leader. On the contrary the wire-line segment stands at 31.4 million connections, with government owned BSNL dominating this sector.

Although there is a large subscriber base and substantial tele-density, the average revenue per user (ARPU) is quite low. The report than highlights the new avenues like MVAS, cloud and datacenter services for revenue generation for the Indian telecoms.
