India's Top 10 Wireless Service Providers


Bangalore: India is world’s fastest growing telecom industry, and it is more likely to become world’s top mobile market by 2013 with more than a billion mobile users, according to the recent survey from Telecom Regulatory Authority Of India (TRAI).

There are multiple wireless service providers in India, competing with each other, catering the enormous mobile user base. According to TRAI, private operators hold 88.9 percent of the wireless market share based on subscriber base, whereas government’s 2 PSU operators hold only 11.5 percent.

#10 MTNL

Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited known as MTNL, is a state-owned telecommunications service provider. The company mainly operates in two Indian metro cities, Mumbai and New Delhi, and in island nation of Mauritius in Africa.  The company had a monopoly in two metros until telecom sector was opened to other service providers in 1992.  

In recent years, MTNL’s revenue and market share saw a steep fall due to immense competition from private players in Indian telecom sector. The company currently holds a market share of 0.58 percent.

#9 MTS

Mobile TeleSystems, popularly known as MTS, is a telecommunication company headquartered in New Delhi, India. MTS India is a subsidiary of Russian conglomerate Sistema, and provides services all over India with customer base of 16 million as on 2012. The services provided by the company include wireless voice, broadband internet, and messaging and data services. MTS has 1.85 percent market share in Indian telecom sector.
