India To Be Hit By 1 Gbps Internet Soon

Bangalore: Download a High Definition movie in seconds; buffer YouTube videos at lightning speeds- It’s not more a thing to Kansas City alone, but India too, as telecom infrastructure firms in the country are planning to provide internet connections with speeds of one gigabits per second by the mid of next year.

The plan is likely to put India in the elite club of countries where a high speed internet is available to domestic users. Google, in July had launched its first ever high speed internet service of 1 Gbps speed, “Google Fiber” in Kansas City, U.S.

"In the next 6-9 months, world class 1,000 Mbps or 1 Gbps plans will be available in India to residential consumers. On connections like these, the same two hour HD movie of about 2.2 GB will download in 30 seconds," said Rajnish Wahi, CEO of Radius Infratel, a telecom infrastructure firm which is planning to establish high speed connections in nine Indian cities.

According to Wahi, the discussions with service providers are underway and network deployment is already complete to enable this in Gurgaon. The company had partnered with real estate developers for fiber optic network that will provide high-speed broadband services in projects being developed by them.

Currently, Bharti Airtel and Tata Teleservices have 100 megabit per second plans in the country for common users, which cost over Rs 5,000 per month.

According to a recent Akamai State of The Internet Report, India is one among the countries with lowest broadband adoption. However, country had witnessed the largest improvement in peak connection speeds at 21 % over the first quarter of 2012, improving its average peak connection speed to 6.9 Mbps.
