Google+ Surpasses Twitter in the Race for the Largest Social Media Network

Bangalore: Google+ the social networking platform which was termed as a failure by most analysts and experts soon after its release in third quarter of 2011 has now emerged to become the 2nd largest social networking site in the world.

As of December 2012, Google+ had a total of 500 million registered users of which 235 million were active on a monthly basis.

Data collected from GWI.8 (Q4 2012) shows that people are shifting from localized to a more global one. According to the new report, Google+ had close to 350 million active users which is a 27% jump from the year prior to make it second only after Facebook. YouTube was ranked third with over 300 million active users, demonstrating the immense opportunity of linking Google’s services through the G+ social layer. This is also a key indication of why Google+ integrated with the Google product set is a doorway to the future of search and the internet.

Google + was initially launched as “Google Circles” as a field test in June 2011 on an invitation only basis. The site was then specifically geared towards organizing friendship information. Later upon the official launch of Google+, the circle became a layer and it was connected with all of Google’s services like YouTube and the search engine. It was seen by most users as a massive failure as it had nothing new to offer, with Facebook already dominating the market and the upsurge of the micro blogging site Twitter, but the current statistics say people are warming up to its presence and using the social media platform to connect with their friends.
