Bangalore: There is more to celebrate with Google’s 15th birthday. The Mountain View based company, on Thursday, revealed that it had quietly rolled out an update to Google Search, called as Hummingbird.

Amit Singhal, Senior Vice President of Search said that the latest algorithm makes Google Search to understand user queries better. He also said that Hummingbird currently affects 90 percent of worldwide searches via Google.

The last update to the Search Engine came 3 years ago, called Caffeine. The update gave much needed relief to the users by bringing up the web content that was more relevant to the queries. Google weeded out websites that tried to trick Google's search engine into believing their content was related to common search requests. As the result of Caffeine, hundreds of websites that consistently won a coveted top spot in search results had been pushed to back pages or ousted complete.

Singhal said that the update is primarily aimed at giving Google's search engine a better grasp at understanding concepts instead of mere words. He also added that the change is needed to be done, since people are now routinely enter lengthy questions into the search box instead of just a few words. With the advent of Smartphones and Google's voice-recognition technology, the users are literally talking to Google Search.

Besides updating its search engine, Google also announced a few other updates to existing search features aimed at providing concise information to the users. The updates include comparison filters, improved exploration for songs and revamped mobile apps for search.
