Google Doodle Celebrates 216th Anniversary OF The First Parachute Jump

Bangalore:  Google has created a doodle to celebrate the 216th anniversary of the historical parachute jump by Andre-Jacques Garnerin. The interactive doodle has a parachute that can be controlled by the user with left or right arrow keys on the keyboard.

On October 22, 1797 Garnerin jumped from a height of 32,00 feet using a seven meter long parachute made of silk cloth. He did this adventurous event from Parc Monceau in Paris at the age of 28. The parachute that Garnerin made was frameless and had a basket mounted below it. The ever first performance of this kind brought him the title of ‘Official Aeronaut of France’. A real life experience of parachuting is achieved when users tilt their smartphones to control the jumper.

Garnerin was born on January 31st, 1769 and joined the French Army in 1793 as an inspector after completing his graduation in Physics. He started parachuting in 1797 and disproved the common notion that females cannot withstand air pressure by a demonstration with Citoyenne Henri on board.

He was married to Jeanne Genevieve Labrosse who was his student and the first ever female parachutist to take part in the ‘Tour of England’. Garnerin was put to rest in August 18, 1823 followed by an accident while making a balloon.
