Datawind Tops India's Tablet Market, Woos Micromax

Bangalore: Datawind, the U.K based hardware manufacturer, reportedly lead India's tablet market during the first quarter of 2013. It witnessed a strong 15 percent of market share beating the home grown rival Micromax which had about 12percent share, reports TOI.

Datawind is the maker of the Indian government's 2,500 Aakash tablet. Earlier this year the company was having issues with the Indian government relating to its supply and delivery commitments. However now, government's project to have an Aakash tablet available to every student in India is now a step closer. Even though, Datawind shipments do not include its sale of Aakash tablets to the government, it topped the Indian tablet market.

DataWind CEO Suneet Singh Tuli says the focus on affordability and connectivity factors have helped them to accomplish the milestone.

According to reports nearly 10,000 tablets were shipped everyday during the first quarter, and overall shipments recorded a 150percent growth.

As per  Faisal Kawoosa, analyst at CyberMedia,  "The continued long-term growth in shipments of tablets in the India market further points to the fact that a large proportion of first time users of computers in emerging markets like India are getting to experience computing through this highly portable, converged form factor."

The report also confirms that 905,000 tablets were shipped in the quarter, but only 9 tablet vendors shipped in significant volumes of more than 20,000 units during the period.
