Zomato soon to launch 'District app' to take-charge of the 'going out' business

Deepinder Goyal led food delivery giant Zomato has introduced 'District,' a new app designed to consolidate its "going-out" business.

The upcoming application will feature a range of services, including dining options, ticket purchasing for films and events, sports ticketing, live entertainment, shopping, and staycation arrangements.

This initiative is a component of Zomato's strategy to diversify its offerings beyond its primary food delivery services, as indicated by CEO Deepinder Goyal in a communication to shareholders.

CEO of Zomato Deepinder Goyal underscored the company's goal to branch out into a broader range of lifestyle services.

Deepinder Goyal said, Today, Zomato and Blinkit are our two large consumer businesses, serving customers' needs at home. However, we also have one of India’s largest 'going-out' businesses, helping our customers discover restaurants for dining out.”

The launch positions Zomato in direct competition with established players such as BookMyShow, which currently leads the online movie-ticket booking market in India.

Goyal further added, "Building a one-stop destination app for going-out could be a game-changer for each of these use cases, and we intend to do exactly that with our new District app. If we execute this well, we see going-out becoming the third large B2C business emerging out of Zomato."

In Q1FY25, Zomato reported a significant net profit of 253 crore, a substantial increase from the 2 crore net profit recorded in the same quarter last year, which marked the company's first net profit since its 2021 listing.

Revenue surged by 74% year-on-year to 4,206 crore, up from 2,416 crore in the same quarter of the previous year.

The Gross Order Value (GOV) for the quarter swelled up by 53% to 15,455 crore, driven by growth in consumer-facing segments such as food delivery, quick-commerce, and going-out.
