Zoho and Startups Lead India's Web Browser Challenge, Advancing Digital Independence
In a move to achieve digital independence, the government of India has announced the winners of the Indian Web Browser Development Challenge (IWBDC), a flagship project under the Atmanirbhar Bharat scheme. The challenge was to create a safe, home-grown web browser tailored for Indian users.
At a ceremony by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw unveiled the victorious teams and reinforced India's goal of emerging as a "product nation" through the promotion of indigenous development of technological solutions.
Zoho Corporation was the overall winner, bagging the grand prize, with Team PING and Team Ajna winning the first and second runner-up prizes, respectively. They received 10 million 7.5 million, and 5million , respectively. A special mention was accorded to "Jio Vishwakarma" for their creative cross-platform browser concept. The minister also praised the increasing participation of smaller cities in the contest, representing India's increasing pool of technical expertise.
The new web browser, which has recently been created, is likely to improve online security, comply with India's Data Protection Act, and keep user data inside the nation. It will also work on widely used platforms like Windows, iOS, and Android.
The IWBDC drew 434 teams, which underwent three phases: Ideation, Prototype, and Productization. The last eight teams were assessed by a star jury. In the future, the government will also invite more startups to create safe and scalable digital solutions to propel India's march toward digital self-reliance.
High-level officials from MeitY, C-DAC, and industry captains attended the event, marking an important milestone in India's quest for technological independence.
