Unicorns Propose India's Startups Club in Meeting with Piyush Goyal
In an unprecedented gathering, 54 out of the 111 Unicorns in India convened with Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal. The discussion centered around the growth trajectory of the Indian startup ecosystem, the role of domestic capital in fostering and scaling startups, and India's standing in the global startup landscape. Unicorns expressed intentions to establish a Startup Club of India to collectively address issues with the government and other platforms, aiming to enhance the startup ecosystem in the country. Vijay Sekhar Sharma, Founder of Paytm, mentioned, "The Minister proposed the idea of forming a club of unicorns or an association of startups, which was well-received, and we will work towards establishing such a club or association".
Through the association of startups, numerous solutions can be devised, such as establishing connections with bankers and investors to facilitate access to capital. The meeting, lasting over four hours, included prominent figures like Rikant Pitti, Co-Founder of EaseMyTrip; Sandeep Aggarwal, founder of Droom; Vijay Sekhar Sharma, founder of Paytm; Deepinder Goyal, founder of Zomato; Aman Gupta, co-founder of BoAt; and representatives from other unicorns such as Flipkart, Phonepe, Swiggy, OYO and Zerodha. Discussions revolved around domestic capital versus international capital, strategies to deepen the startup ecosystem in the country, and challenges faced by the founders of Unicorns.
Rikant Pitti, reflecting on the meeting, mentioned that such gatherings are rare and emphasized discussions on topics like domestic capital, international capital, and ways to enhance the startup ecosystem in the country. He also highlighted the 'nation first, business later' campaign initiated by the travel industry. Sandeep Aggarwal noted that the discussion focused on addressing company law matters related to startups, increasing capital access in tier 3 cities, and addressing broad tax issues. The Minister was reportedly receptive to the suggestions made by the founders.
These startups not only pioneer innovative solutions and technologies but also play a significant role in generating substantial employment and contributing to the nation's growth. Unicorns are increasingly integral to India's growth narrative, taking the country's startup story to a global level and attracting investments from around the world.
