Stellantis readies to bring Chinese EV startup Leapmotor to India
Stellantis, the fourth-largest automaker in the world and headquartered in the Netherlands, is preparing to launch the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) startup Leapmotor in India.
Established in 2015, Leapmotor is an electric vehicle specialist with four models available at present, priced from around $17,800. Leapmotor has a 2.5% market share in China and sold 294,000 units in 2024, representing a staggering growth of 104% over 2023.
Shailesh Hazela, Managing Director and CEO of Stellantis India, welcomed Leapmotor's arrival in India, saying, "We are thrilled to announce the arrival of the Leapmotor brand in India. With our current presence through Jeep and Citroën, we see the strategic importance and immense potential of the Indian market."
Stellantis has also recently reshaped its top leadership to align more closely with long-term goals, increase agility, and promote a culture of innovation and collaboration as it readies Leapmotor for launch in India and deepens its Citroën and Jeep brands.
Though the European automaker, which holds a partial stake in Leapmotor, did not give a launch schedule, it had earlier announced intentions to start Leapmotor sales in the last quarter of 2024. The firm has not communicated why there could be delays.
Leapmotor will first import its products in full and then move to local assembly in the future. India is Leapmotor's second wave of overseas expansion after Australia and New Zealand, with the first wave targeting European, South American, and other Asia-Pacific markets.
