Sony PlayStation Integrates with Messaging App Discord

As part of a deal with Discord, a Sony unit has made a minority investment.agreement to connect the messaging platform to consumer electronics PlayStation is the company's gaming division.

The deal which was announced by Sony Interactive Entertainment Chief

Executive Officer Jim Ryan, comes after Reuters reported last month that Discord had ended sale talks with Microsoft to focus on expanding its business as a standalone company.

Discord is a community-building tool that combines VoIP, instant messaging, and digital delivery. Users communicate with voice calls, video calls, text messaging, media and files in private chats or as part of communities called "servers". Servers are a collection of persistent chat rooms and voice chat channels.

It was first common among gamers and streamers, but it is now used by a wide range of cultures, including sports fans, music groups, and cryptocurrency investors.

"Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year," Ryan said in a blog post.

Discord has over 140 million monthly users and operates on a subscription-based business model. The business was estimated at $7 billion after raising $100 million in a private funding round in December.

For Microsoft's Xbox gaming platform, Discord already has an active partnership. This collaboration, however, is limited to profiles. Sony's latest collaboration aims for deeper integration, resulting in a stronger gaming experience for PlayStation users.

The specifics of PlayStation's deal with Discord are still hazy, so it's unclear what this means for gamers, the PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5, or the Discord app. The most obvious assumption is that a Discord app would be released for PlayStation, but the agreement may also simply mean that Discord and PlayStation Network will be connected for more seamless communication on consoles and mobile devices. Sony says it will have more information "in the coming months" on the subject.
