PM Modi applauds ONDC's role in redefining the Startup Scene of India

The government announced on Thursday that more than seven lakh startups have already joined the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC). A project supported by the government, was introduced in 2021. It was mainly established to allow startups to participate in digital commerce.

According to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, ONDC has revolutionized e-commerce and empowered small businesses.

Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal stated in a post on X that over the past three years, the platform has given small businesses more clout on the network by leveling the playing field for them.

The mission of ONDC is to advance an open platform for retail e-commerce in all its forms. It aids in the e-commerce growth of startups and lessens the dominance of industry giants.

It is a non-profit organization that has developed a set of guidelines for vendors, shipping companies, and operators of payment gateways to voluntarily adopt.

"ONDC has contributed to empowering startups and revolutionizing e-commerce, thus playing a vital role in furthering growth and prosperity," Modi said in response to Goyal's post.

Over 200 network participants have participated in over 150 million transactions through ONDC to date.

The ONDC announced in 2024 that multiple startups had been integrated into its network. The unicorns Zerodha, EaseMyTrip, Cars24, Physics Wallah, PolicyBazaar, OfBusiness, WinZO, Livspace, and GlobalBees signed the letter of intent to partner with the platform.

"It is much lower than any of the other platforms, where our current gross merchandise value is exponentially higher than that in ONDC," Gupta remarked in comparison to sales on other platforms.
