Pixxel Inaugurates 30,000 sq ft Satellite Manufacturing Facility in Bengaluru
Pixxel, a space technology startup based in Bengaluru, officially opened its new spacecraft manufacturing facility, named 'MegaPixxel', on January 15 in Bengaluru. Spanning 30,000 square feet, this facility has the capacity to manufacture 40 large satellites each year and provides comprehensive services, including satellite manufacturing, spacecraft assembly, integration, and testing (AIT), all housed under a single roof.
ISRO Chairman S. Somanath inaugurated the facility where Pixxel aims to create hyperspectral satellites entirely from the ground up. The company plans to handle the design, manufacturing, integration, and testing of these satellites to ensure they meet launch conditions before transporting them to the launch site. Awais Ahmed, Pixxel's CEO, emphasized the increased satellite production capacity, highlighting the potential to provide crucial data more rapidly to customers. This, in turn, enables informed decision-making and addresses the specific requirements of vital industries such as agriculture, energy, forestry, and environmental monitoring.
Within the facility are two state-of-the-art clean rooms, adhering to ISO Class 7 and ISO Class 8 standards, to prevent contaminants that could impact satellite functionality during assembly and integration. Additionally, the facility encompasses laboratories for advanced camera integration, electronics research and development, and electrical assembly. It also houses a mechanical workshop, a mission control room, and office space for over 200 employees. Notably, the facility incorporates a wastewater treatment plant for water conservation, smart heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems for energy efficiency, and measures aimed at reducing its carbon footprint.
