OpenAI plans to conduct a developer meetup in Bengaluru in January, aiming to involve Indian tech experts in discussions centered on AI safety. Anna Makanju, OpenAI's VP of Global Affairs, conveyed excitement regarding this initiative, mentioning, "I am pleased to announce our upcoming developer gathering in Bengaluru in January, featuring our VP of Engineering, Srinivas Narayanan, with additional events planned in the future".
Makanju highlighted India's extensive talent pool and technological capabilities on the global platform, emphasizing the necessity of establishing governance frameworks for AI. She underscored OpenAI's collaborative endeavors with the Biden Administration and G7, emphasizing the requirement for an international entity to oversee the safety and fair distribution of advanced technology. Speaking at the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) Summit in Delhi, Makanju stressed the urgency of formulating governance structures for AI and establishing global oversight to ensure the responsible and fair implementation of powerful technology. "We need to create an international organization to ensure the safety of the most potent technology and its equitable benefits", she added.
The GPAI summit, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, centered on AI discussions, engaging international delegates in sessions focusing on risk mitigation and fostering innovation. Moreover, the event aimed to craft a consensus-driven declaration on AI to address potential risks while promoting technological advancement. India, assuming the GPAI council chair role from France in November, reaffirmed its commitment to leveraging technology, particularly AI, for societal welfare and ensuring fair benefits worldwide. Prime Minister Modi reiterated this commitment, highlighting the necessity of a regulatory framework to guarantee the safety and reliability of AI globally.
