OpenAI Unleashes Free API Tools as Chinese Startups Close In
OpenAI launched new tools to help developers build advanced AI agents, intensifying the competition with fast-emerging Chinese startups. The new Responses API allows developers to create AI agents that can independently perform complex tasks, replacing the existing Assistants API, which will be phased out by mid-2026. Notably, the new API is available at no additional cost.
This launch follows the release of cutting-edge AI models by Chinese startups, some of which claim to rival or surpass U.S. industry leaders. Monica, a rising AI firm, introduced its autonomous agent Manus, claiming it outperforms OpenAI’s DeepResearch agent. Monica also announced a strategic partnership with the developers of Alibaba’s Qwen AI models, further bolstering its capabilities.
Another Chinese startup, DeepSeek, has drawn attention from Silicon Valley executives for delivering high-performing AI models at a fraction of the cost of American alternatives.
As the global AI race accelerates, OpenAI’s new tools signal a push to empower developers and strengthen its position as the market leader. By lowering barriers for innovation, OpenAI aims to stay ahead, even as international competitors rapidly close the gap.
