Monash Vice-Chancellor joins ASEAN-Australia Centre board to foster ties to Southeast Asia
Monash University Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Sharon Pickering, has recently been appointed to the inaugural board of the ASEAN-Australia Centre, a new institution dedicated to strengthening Australia’s relationships with Southeast Asia. Appointed by the Hon Senator Penny Wong, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Professor Pickering will leverage her vast experience in global research and education to support the Centre’s mission of deepening Australia’s ties with ASEAN member states.
The ASEAN-Australia Centre, launched in July following an announcement by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, is set to play a pivotal role in enhancing people-to-people links, cultural exchanges, and economic engagement between Australia and ASEAN countries. With Monash’s robust presence in the region—including fully owned campuses in Malaysia and Indonesia, and partnerships in China and India—the university is strategically positioned to drive impactful collaborations. Professor Pickering’s role on the board will help foster educational, cultural, and economic connections that are integral to Australia’s strategic interests in Southeast Asia.
