Indian Startups Thrive Due to Digital Public Infrastructure: Industry Leaders
Industry experts emphasized that the evolution of digital public infrastructure (DPI) over the past decade in India has been instrumental in driving the country's startup growth. Speaking at FICCI's annual general meeting and convention, Sanjeev Bikhchandani, the Founder of Info Edge India Ltd, highlighted the improved state of research and development in India compared to ten years ago. This advancement has led to a surge in startup IPOs within the Delhi-NCR region.
"While early-stage startups continue to receive adequate funding, government support in opening up potential client markets in sectors like defense technology and drones remains crucial due to the government's predominant role as the primary purchaser", he conveyed to the audience. Ghazal Alagh, Co-Founder of Mamaearth (Honasa Consumer Pvt Ltd), highlighted the ongoing evolution of the startup ecosystem favoring entrepreneurship. "The expanding middle class in India has significantly empowered consumer-oriented companies. Government-established state-level incubation centers stand out as a noteworthy initiative empowering students to establish their startups", she remarked.
Rohit Bansal, Co-founder of Titan Capital and Ace Vector Group, stressed the importance of measures like creating a fair taxation environment that bridges the gap between public and private companies to uplift the country's startup ecosystem. Neel Mehta, Director and Co-Founder of Asteria Aerospace Ltd, noted that sectors such as defense, space, AI/ML, and biotech reap significant benefits from Deep Tech. "Public awareness regarding drone use has notably increased in India over the past decade. The deeptech sector has also contributed to the emergence of modern job opportunities. Aligning with the right thematic focus and ensuring effective execution could serve as the cornerstone for a startup's success", he emphasized.
