India Bets Big on AI With Rs 10,300 Crore Push to Power Next Tech Leap
  • India will invest over Rs 10,300 crore to expand AI computing power to 38,000 GPUs under the IndiaAI Mission.
  • High-end GPUs will be available at a subsidised rate of Rs 65 per hour, supporting startups, researchers, and institutions.
  • The mission aims to boost innovation, skills, and India-specific AI models, strengthening India’s position as a leading global AI hub.
India is strengthening its push in artificial intelligence (AI) with a major investment of over Rs 10,300 crore under the IndiaAI Mission, aiming to boost the country’s computing power and make AI more affordable and accessible.
The government said the mission will expand India’s AI computing capacity to around 38,000 Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) over the next five years. This step is expected to support startups, researchers, students, and academic institutions by giving them access to high-end computing tools at low cost.
Launched in March 2024, the IndiaAI Mission focuses on building strong digital infrastructure, encouraging innovation, and developing AI models designed for Indian needs. One of its key features is the availability of advanced GPUs at a subsidised rate of Rs 65 per hour, which significantly lowers the cost of AI research and development.
India’s technology and AI ecosystem already employs more than six million people. The technology sector is expected to cross USD 280 billion in revenue this year. Experts estimate that AI alone could add nearly USD 1.7 trillion to India’s economy by 2035.
India has also been ranked as the world’s third most AI-competitive country in Stanford University’s 2025 Global AI Vibrancy ranking. The ranking highlights India’s growth in AI talent, research output, startups, and supportive government policies.
The country hosts over 1,800 Global Capability Centres, with more than 500 focused on AI. Nearly 89 per cent of startups launched last year used AI in their products or services.
The IndiaAI Mission is built on seven pillars, including computing infrastructure, AI applications, quality datasets, foundation models, future skills, startup funding, and safe and trusted AI. Initiatives like AIKosh, a national data platform, and BharatGen, a multilingual AI model, aim to support sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, education, governance, and climate services.
The government said its focus remains on responsible and inclusive AI growth, ensuring the benefits of technology reach people across all regions. With events like the India AI Impact Summit 2026, India is set to strengthen its global role in artificial intelligence.
