Govt looks to boost regulatory and legal architecture to improve startup ecosystem

The Centre has begun looking at ways to bolster the existing regulatory and legal architecture as it seems them as a major source of creating livelihood and entrepreneurship.

There is at least one startup in each of the 630 districts, according to the department for the promotion of industry and internal trade (DPIIT).

Government sources said that DPIIT is working on the next set of measures and has held consultations with state-run banks on how they can consider providing loans to startups after pricing in the risk involved. “There are various ways to deal with this and the department has discussed some of the options with banks in which they can take a share of the upside later,” an official source said.

The finance ministry had organised a recent meeting of state-run bank chiefs in which the issue was discussed.

Pointing to India having the third-largest ecosystem with more than 70 unicorns, the government does not see equity as a limiting factor.

A massive startup campaign was launched by the government six years ago and DPIIT is looking to carry that process forward.

Sources said that to coincide with the sixth anniversary of Startup India, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, DPIIT has lined up a week-long Innovation Week in early January, where IITs will be linked with those who provide funding, with the 190 finalists of the Startup awards also making a pitch to investors.
