Government aims to boost EV Ecosystem with Charging Infra
In the interim budget, Nirmala Sitharaman promised to develop the EV industry by emphasising production, infrastructure for charging, and solarization of one crore households.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman unveiled a strategy to advance the electric vehicle (EV) industry today during her interim budget statement. The government committed to fund the infrastructure needed for EV manufacture and charging.

In order to remove the financial obstacles to e-bus adoption, manufacturers are being encouraged to establish manufacturing centres in India through the payment security mechanism, a joint financial security system between the United States and India.

As per a government announcement, as of March 21, 2023, 6,586 public charging stations were active in India, based on statistics from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency. With a population of over 4 million, India's top 9 cities would require 18,000 public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations by 2030.

Speaking on this, Sitharaman says “Our Government will expand and strengthen the e-vehicle ecosystem by supporting manufacturing and charging infrastructure. Greater adoption of e-buses for public transport networks will be encouraged through payment security mechanism".
