Google's Gemini AI Chatbot Offers Tailored Responses Using Conversation History
Google announced that its Gemini AI chatbot can now recall details from past conversations, making interactions more seamless. This new capability allows Gemini to summarize previous discussions or retrieve information shared in earlier chats, eliminating the need for users to repeat themselves or search through old threads.
The recall feature is rolling out to English-speaking subscribers of Google’s $20-per-month AI chatbot plan, Google One AI Premium. In the coming weeks, it will expand to additional languages and enterprise users. The goal is to make Gemini more personalized and fluid in conversations.
However, storing past chat history raises privacy concerns. To address this, Google is giving users control over their data. Users can review, delete, or manage how long their chat history is stored. They can also disable the recall feature entirely through the "My Activity" page in Gemini. Google emphasizes that it does not use chat histories to train AI models.
Memory and recall features are becoming a key focus for AI developers. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has previously stated that enhanced memory is one of the most requested features for ChatGPT. Over the past year, both Google and OpenAI have introduced broader memory functions for their chatbots. These allow AI to remember personal preferences, such as how users like to be addressed, favorite foods, or transportation choices.
However, unlike Gemini’s new recall feature, these memory functions do not automatically store or recall entire chat histories. Instead, they remember specific details to enhance interactions over time.
The introduction of recall marks a significant step in AI chatbot development, aiming to improve user experience while balancing privacy considerations.
