Byju's App Pulled from Play Store Over Unpaid AWS Dues
  • Byju's Android app is off the Google Play Store, and its website is now a basic landing page, affecting millions of students.
  • Unpaid cloud service bills have led AWS to pause backend services, causing functionality issues.
  • Founder Byju Raveendran is launching “Byju’s 3.0,” focusing on AI learning tools and addressing past mistakes.

Byju's flagship Android app has been taken down from the Google Play Store, and its website has been reduced to a basic landing page, leaving millions of students in India without access. Those who still have the app installed are running into problems with streaming video content and using paid services, while some of the company's content pages have disappeared from search results.

A report from Moneycontrol reveals that Byju's has fallen behind on payments for cloud services, prompting Amazon-owned AWS to halt several backend operations. Sources mentioned, “There have been payment delays to AWS, and some services have been paused as a result. App content, website functionality, and video delivery are currently down.”

The Think & Learn Premium app, which is listed separately on the Play Store, has also become mostly unusable, according to multiple user reports. While the iOS version is still available on the Apple App Store, many key features across both platforms have stopped working due to backend issues. Other apps, like Byju's Exam Prep, are still functioning for now.

These technical troubles mark a significant downturn for a company that was once a leader in the edtech space. Founded in 2011 by teacher-turned-entrepreneur Byju Raveendran, Byju's saw explosive growth during the pandemic, hitting a peak valuation of $22 billion and becoming India's most valuable startup. However, this upward momentum has taken a nosedive due to governance problems, disputes with investors, missed debt payments, and widespread layoffs.

In recent months, Raveendran has been working to regain control of the narrative. In various interviews and social media posts, he has shared plans for “Byju’s 3.0,” which includes a renewed emphasis on AI-driven learning tools and a commitment to enhancing classroom outcomes.
