Ashish Bhasin is delving into a new stream of entrepreneurship with his latest startup, The Bhasin Consulting Group (TBCG). The venture will provide leadership mentoring for founders, CEOs and company board members to fuel growth. Bhasin mentions over a call that the company will focus exclusively on startups in the advertising and marketing space in India, as these companies have tremendous growth potential.
“We don’t concentrate enough on advertising entrepreneurs. There are many bright people with good domain knowledge and expertise and they use this as a starting point for their business. However, we need to go beyond that, think global and make an impact. It’s possible, especially with the kind of talent we have in India,” said Bhasin.
According to the advertising industry veteran, there are many areas that hold potential for growth, such as outdoor advertising, experiential marketing, digital advertising and so on. Bhasin’s observation is that most entrepreneurs don’t have the vision, experience, or planning required to grow their businesses beyond a certain level. This is the gap he hopes to fill with his startup.
“Right now, we are running advertising like a cottage industry in India and we need to change that. There are more potential entrepreneurs these days because of the fact that startup culture is catching on and capital is more easily available. Indian entrepreneurs are building different things, but they lack the global experience and leadership skills to take it to the next level,” he said.
Bhasin is clear that he does not play a passive role in the mentoring and guiding process with TBCG - that he will also be investing in these companies in an effort to be more hands-on and involved with the growth and nurturing of these fledgling businesses. Before starting TBCG, Bhasin mentioned that he has been involved with 14 acquisitions in India and 24 more acquisitions across the APAC region.
He theorised that the main problem with Indian entrepreneurs is that they are in a constant hurry and so, they think small. Essentially, Bhasin wants these entrepreneurs to think beyond that and invest in creating an ecosystem to support growth in this segment.
“Entrepreneurship is a lonely job. We want to hold up a mirror and show them the value that they have and how they can think bigger,” said Bhasin. His main focus area is on advertising startups that hold high growth potential. He categorically stated that he was not interested in people or companies that create short term solutions to marketing problems - he wants entrepreneurs to think bigger and go beyond that.
In June 2022, Bhasin joined RD&X Network as its co-founder and chairman, a venture co-founded by former WATConsult CEO, Rajiv Dhingra. Bhasin told that apart from their growth potential, Bhasin is interested in shaping a robust profit margin for the entrepreneurs. He calls on entrepreneurs to look beyond the vanity numbers in order to ultimately deliver returns to the shareholders of the company.
