Amitabh Kant Calls on Indian Startups to Develop Indigenous AI Technologies

On Friday Amitabh Kant who serves as India’s G20 Sherpa declared the country needs to invest in developing domestic advanced technologies like artificial intelligence to prevent technological dependency on foreign nations. India should pursue technological independence through the development of innovative high tech systems that reflect the cultural essence of the nation.

Kant issued a warning about India developing into a Western technological colony or any other global power by promoting quick efficient and affordable innovation.

India needs to defend its technological self governance so it can act as a leader in technological advancement. India must maintain its technological independence against West and all other foreign nations. During the second 'Startup Mahakumbh' session Kant emphasized that India needs to move forward with economical and effective and power efficient flexible methods of innovation.

He emphasized that the Indian startup environment embodies the pioneering spirit which defines New India. The Startup India Initiative started in 2016 sets out to build platforms that promote innovation while offering funding and backing for new business ventures. Since 2016 the recognition of startups has increased dramatically from 400 to over 161,000 in 2025. Kant emphasized the need to maintain this acceleration which should be vital for India’s future development path.

Kant emphasized that India should use its extensive data resources to create sophisticated technologies. Kant emphasized the requirement of building extensive AI systems which do not contain Western biases while surpassing basic AI application methods.

Frontier system development requires creating mathematical models from local datasets that do not contain Western bias. The development of an entire AI ecosystem across all levels stands above focusing solely on applications according to the G20 Sherpa.

He advocated for Indian startups to enter emerging sectors including AI and machine learning together with blockchain technology and big data analytics as well as cybersecurity and space technology and semiconductors because these fields will establish India as a leading deep tech force. He declared that India must establish itself as a leading power in deep technology for the future.

The statements of Piyush Goyal from the previous day received support from Kant as he urged Indian startups to commit to deep tech and robotics and next generation industries.
