Amazon takes strategic step to transform Amazon Pay into India's standalone app
Amazon intends to enhance the adoption of its payment service in India by creating a dedicated app. This information was divulged by three insiders who are knowledgeable about the matter.
In India, Amazon Pay is integrated into the company's primary e-commerce app and facilitates a range of transactions including transferring money to individuals and merchants, paying bills, purchasing insurance and travel tickets, investing in mutual funds as well as digital gold. It also allows users to buy travel tickets.
According to two sources, the American technology company has been considering separating its payments platform from the online shopping application for approximately one year and plans to move forward with this strategy in upcoming months. An individual familiar with the situation also stated that they have already contacted NPCI for authorization.
According to an insider, there are Amazon executives who think that the e-commerce app isn't giving enough attention to Amazon Pay. They suggest that creating a separate mobile application with a sole emphasis on this payments platform would assist in increasing its popularity across the nation.
The sources, who asked to remain anonymous due to the confidential and ongoing nature of the discussions, warned that Amazon, facing numerous challenges in India, might change its plans and could potentially abandon the idea. An Amazon spokesperson declined to comment, calling the news speculative.
Speculation was how the news was referred to as an Amazon spokesperson refused to offer any statements on it.
Amongst apps on the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), a widely used payments network in India for online transactions, Amazon Pay holds sixth position.
According to official records from July this year, approximately 72.4 million transactions were processed by Amazon Pay accounting for around 0.5% of all such dealings through the medium, whereas Walmart's PhonePe conducted 6.9 billion and Google Pay carried out operations worth about five times as much at over than five billion each respectively during that same period of time which is very high when compared with it.
